Sense of Urgency

When diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer, Queen Stewart doesn’t stand still: she embarks on a soulful journey that the new urgency to her life now demands.

About the film

At 35, Queen Stewart had checked all the right boxes—successful law practice, loving family, and a carefully charted path forward. Then came the diagnosis that would rewrite everything: stage 3 breast cancer.

“SENSE OF URGENCY” takes you inside Queen’s extraordinary journey through treatment at MD Anderson at Cooper, where our cameras capture moments rarely seen in medical settings. But this isn’t just another cancer story—it’s a wake-up call that arrives with startling clarity.

“Why did it take cancer for me to start living?” Queen asks as she sits in her chemotherapy chair. We watch as this formerly cautious attorney transforms before our eyes, stepping onto comedy stages to find unexpected laughter in life’s darkest corners and recording music that had previously existed only in daydreams.

Between medical appointments and difficult decisions, we witness the delicate balance of a family adapting to new realities. Queen’s husband Richard becomes both anchor and sail, while their children learn resilience in real-time. These intimate family moments reveal both the weight and the gifts that serious illness brings.

The film follows Queen back to Asbury Park, where train tracks once symbolized the divide between her challenging childhood and her aspirations. Born to a mother struggling with addiction and a father cycling through prison, Queen’s determination carried her to law school—but cancer forces her to question whether success and fulfillment are truly the same thing.

For Black women facing a breast cancer mortality rate 42% higher than their white counterparts, Queen’s journey offers both inspiration and urgent information about early detection. Her original song “Daydreaming” becomes the emotional heartbeat of the film, its refrain “I will overcome” echoing far beyond her personal battle.

“SENSE OF URGENCY” challenges us all with a question that shouldn’t require a diagnosis to consider: What are you waiting for? Queen’s answer becomes clear with each new risk she takes—life’s greatest tragedy isn’t illness, but the dreams we postpone until tomorrow.
